March 31 – Goa, India
Goa is another province in India. It is also a city. We are docked at a nearby port on the Arabian Sea. Goa was settled by the Portuguese in the 1500s. Vasco de Gama was a major player in the settlement of this area. Unlike many other areas of India, the Portuguese never lost control of this region. Many of the buildings still in use are from the 16th and 17th centuries. Even after India was united and achieved its independence, the Portuguese still had major interests here. Even today, about 20% of the population is Portuguese and many others have both Indian and Portuguese passports.
Primary products for export are iron ore, boxite, and magnite.
This was a
typical included tour with the main feature being ABC (Another Beautiful
Church). We were shown a basilica and a cathedral. Two very different
structures just across the street from each other. On to a shopping and comfort
stop before being given about an hour to wander around the current capital
city.
The bus we were on was pretty bad. I don’t think it had springs or shocks but at least it had air conditioning. I heard from several others that none of the busses had shocks or springs and at least one of them didn’t have air. And the roads were quite bumpy. When going over speed bumps, even at slow speeds, the passengers were airborne in their seats.
We were back to
the ship in time for lunch and had fun watching a small group of
porpoise/dolphin playing near the ship.
Nor do some cars‼️ CSickels
