Tuesday, April 18 - Rhodes
We had an on-time arrival in Rhodes (or Rhodos) at 8am. The old fortifications are right on the harbor so a great view of them from our stateroom.
We are scheduled for an optional tour today leaving the ship at 10:00 a.m. We have a very nice and knowledgeable guide who gives us a good dose of the history of Rhodes as we drive through the “new” city which is outside the walls of the "old" city. The city of Rhodes is located on the northern tip of the island. The harbor is on the eastern side of the island. We turned a corner and are on the western side of the island. We drive up to the Acropolis to soak in some great views, (there is very little left of the temples that were there) then down the hill again to the walls of the old city. We leave the bus and walk into the old city very near the Grand Master’s Palace. This building is a modern recreation of what had been here. The original was blown up in a very strange occurrence mixing stores of gun powder and lightning. From there we walked down the Street of the Knights. Each country that sent knights to the holy wars had their own house where the Knights would stay. This was a very interesting walk.
All were excellent
and then they topped it off with yogurt and honey. Probably the best Tzatziki
I’ve ever had and certainly their yogurt and honey was a wonderful way to
finish the meal. The local wine they served with the meal wasn’t bad either.
We could take the bus back to the ship or walk. We chose to walk and bought a few trinkets along the way. The walk took about 15 minutes, and we were back to our room.
A very nice day. We certainly won’t be eating dinner tonight.
Did you get recipes? I love following the blog, thank you for doing it.
